Development Pathway FAQ

Kirkwood United Player Development Pathway FAQ

What is the Kirkwood United Player Development Pathway?
t’s a three-track system—White Track, Red Track, and Black Track—designed to provide the right developmental environment for every player, at every age and stage. Each track emphasizes growth, enjoyment, and appropriate challenges tailored to a player’s readiness and goals.

Why does Kirkwood United use a three-track system?
Every player develops differently. This structure allows us to meet players where they are— whether they’re new to the game, balancing multiple sports, or pursuing advanced competition—so each player receives the support they need to thrive.

Is one track “better” than another?
No. Each track is purpose-built to serve players at different points in their journey. Our goal is to strategically position players on a track/in environments that offer both stimulating challenges and opportunities for success, fostering significant growth in confidence, ability, and overall player development.

What are the differences between the tracks?

Track Focus Who it's for Training Competition
White Track Introduction & enjoyment Kindergarten & 1st grade Light, activity- based In-house, fun-first
Red Track Development & learning 2nd grade & up Team and Club Competitive Local leagues/tournaments
Black Track Performance & competition Committed, advanced players Intensive Team and Club Exposure to Higher-level leagues/tournaments

Can a player move between tracks?
Yes. Player development is not linear. As players grow and evolve, they may shift between tracks. Evaluations by coaches and communication with families help guide these transitions.

Does every player have to try out?

  • White Track: No tryout — just register.
  • Red Track: Requires a formal tryout.
  • Black Track: Requires a formal tryout or invitation process.

See our Tryout & Placement Process guide for more detail.

Can players in the Red or Black Tracks play other sports?
Absolutely. We support multi-sport athletes. However, players on Black Track teams should be ready for higher commitment levels.

What if a player isn’t ready for the Black Track now?
That’s perfectly fine. Many players move into the Black Track later in their journey. What matters most is being placed in the right environment for growth right now.

How does this connect to the club’s history and identity?
Our tracks are inspired by Kirkwood’s historic connection to the railroad — representing direction, movement, and connection. Each player is on their own journey, and we provide the tracks to help them move forward.
